In 1985 the Society adopted a policy to purchase art works by artists working in the region. The pieces were bought with the intention of exhibiting them in the region and in places where the public has access but outside the normal confines of galleries. The works are released on extended loans and offered on the basis of the space available, nature of the organisation and the visiting public. In some instances there is a natural context for the work e.g. School or community where the artist studied or worked. Under these circumstances the length of the loan may be extended.

The Society has regularly bought from Norwich School of Art and Design degree shows, the Open Studio scheme and on other occasions that the committee has thought appropriate. The careers of some of the artists represented in the collection have grown considerably since the time of their initial purchase. The works therefore represent important pieces in their artistic development and the development of contemporary art in the region.
