WEDNESDAY 24 FEBRUARY ST JAMES ART PROJECT: AN EVENING WITH CAROLINE JARROLD Caroline, a patron of the NCAS, will talk about the arts proposals Jarrolds have produced for the Riverside development. This should be an enjoyable and informal evening, with a bonus opportunity to see St James’ Mill, the listed former Jarrolds works off Whitefriars, Norwich. Light refreshments will be provided. 7.00 for 7.30 pm.
Directions: meet at the entrance to St James Mill. Members may use the Jarrolds Barrack Street car park (entrance off Barrack Street, just to the west of Greens Health and Fitness Club). Turn right into the car park and do not go straight on to the new offices. The path to St James Mill is towards the riverside of the mill: the main entrance to the mill is at the (far) City end.
TUESDAY 23 MARCH WILLIAM PYE
William Pye is an internationally renowned British sculptor who uses water as his primary means of expression. Since boyhood he has been fascinated by its many natural and man-made manifestations. Through the use of both traditional and new forms, old and modern materials and current technologies, he has managed to control and exploit this wayward substance, making magical and perplexing works of art, often on a grand scale. His works enhance both public and private sites at home and abroad. Recently completed works are a new font for Salisbury Cathedral and a water sculpture, Shimmer, for the famous gardens of Ninfa, south of Rome. Other important works are a major water sculpture for the town of Drammen in Norway, a fountain at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland and an important water feature at Wilton House in Wiltshire. William will talk not only about his own work and its inspiration, but also about the complexities of dealing with large-scale commissions on often very specific sites. King of Hearts, Fye Bridge Street, Norwich
THURSDAY 8 APRIL THE CONTEMPORARY ART SOCIETY 100 YEARS ON
Paul, whom we’re also fortunate to have as an NCAS patron, has transformed the Contemporary Art Society, turning it from a London-based institution to a much larger major nationwide organization for collectors and lovers of contemporary art. He carried out a major piece of research into collecting in East Anglia in 2009, and has been heavily involved in the Art Council’s Turning Point strategy, which is funding a nationwide network of professionals to help develop the collecting scene. Paul will talk on the Contemporary Art Society in its centenary year. King of Hearts, Fye Bridge Street, Norwich
SATURDAY 22 MAY HARLOW AND THE GIBBERD GARDEN Our next day out, on Saturday 22 May, takes us to Harlow and in particular to the Gibberd Garden. Sir Frederick Gibberd, master-planner for Harlow New Town, designed and made his garden at Marsh Lane, Harlow, from the 1950s until his death in 1984. It is now owned and run by a charitable trust. Glades, groves, pools and alleys provide settings for some 80 sculptures, architectural salvage, large ceramic pots, a gazebo and a moated castle. We leave Norwich (Notcutts, where parking is possible) at 9.15 am. Coffee will be served on arrival at Harlow, and there will be an introductory talk and an opportunity to view both the garden and the Gibberd Rooms, part of Sir Frederick and Lady Gibberd’s house (including the Library), which was radically remodelled by Sir Frederick in the 1960s, and has now been restored to that period. A buffet lunch is included and menu options will be offered upon booking. At 2.30 pm there will be a conducted coach tour of Harlow, with an emphasis on the layout and style of the town. Return to Norwich early evening. Cost £28.00 per person (inc. entry, lunch and coffee). Bookings please with cheques made out to ‘NCAS’ to Janey Bevington, 9 Corton Road, Norwich NR1 3PB, tel: 01603 616376, email: j63bevington@btinternet.com
